There are things you do (very innocently) every day that can eventually lead to pain. Sleeping on the same side every night, getting the same side out of bed, brushing your teeth and hair with the same hand, handbag over the same shoulder, opening a door with the same hand and the list go on. Every single human has imbalances in their body but it is only when pain starts to develop that people will start to do something about it.
Above the skeletal and muscular system, the myofascial system do not get address enough during movement classes. If 1 muscle is glued to another, how can it move? Fascia work is the first step during all my classes, without it, the muscles can not move to its optimal strength and length.
Once there is freedom of movement in the body, now we can strengthen with Pilates. My way of teaching is more clinical. I want to mimic as much movement you do in your daily life so you can take knowledge home with you and start to change the imbalances at home just by being mindful of HOW you do things as you go upon your day. For this reason I do mostly unilateral (one sided exercises) so your stronger side can not help your weaker side.
The stretches we do in class are also given as homework. It does not help to come for 2 hours a week and the rest of the 168 hours nothing happens. You can clearly see the difference in my clients who made a commitment to change their own health when they did their homework in just 1 month.
The "problem" bodies often get referred to me as they are not ready to join normal Pilates classes. This has been my niche for 17 years.
Most of my clientele have Scoliosis, kyphosis, back operations, hip operations, shoulder operations, cesareans, pregnancy (I have 3 kids, 1 cesarean and 2 normal after cesarean) problems at L4-6 vertebrae who do not wish to go for back operations or get incontinence.
I choose to be a teacher, not an instructor. Teaching is a 2 way communication method. The feedback you give me during an exercise will guide me to what will come next. No classes are pre-planned.
